Unit 3: Matter & Energy
The universe is made up of two things: matter and energy. Chemistry is often described as the science of matter, but we also work with energy. We will look at similarities and differences and will observe, classify, and measure them.
Objectives:
I can define and identify matter and know that matter is made up of particles.
I know the differences between:
- pure substances and mixtures
- homogenous and heterogenous mixtures
- elements and compounds
- atoms and molecules
I know how to classify a given sample of matter.
I know how to describe a sample of matter using the following properties:
- state of matter
- chemical and physical properties
- intrinsic and extrinsic properties
I know the difference between chemical and physical changes.
I know common techniques of separation used in the lab.
I know the difference between heat and temperature, and their units.
I know the heat equation and the relationships it describes. I can use it in calculations.
