Unit 3: Matter & Energy

Objectives:

  1. I can define and identify matter and know that matter is made up of particles.

  2. I know the differences between:

    - pure substances and mixtures

    - homogenous and heterogenous mixtures

    - elements and compounds

    - atoms and molecules

  3. I know how to classify a given sample of matter.

  4. I know how to describe a sample of matter using the following properties:

    - state of matter

    - chemical and physical properties

    - intrinsic and extrinsic properties

  5. I know the difference between chemical and physical changes.

  6. I know common techniques of separation used in the lab.

  7. I know the difference between heat and temperature, and their units.

  8. I know the heat equation and the relationships it describes. I can use it in calculations.
