Unit 1: Lab Safety & Math Review

In this unit we talk about the dos and don’ts of working in the lab. You will get an introduction to the safety features of our lab as well as the behavior rules which together ensure that we stay unharmed during our work. We will also review math concepts taught earlier.

Objectives:

  1. I know what to do and what not to do in a laboratory.

  2. I know the safety equipment in the lab and its location.

  3. I know the meaning of the GHS symbols.

  4. I know how to read or construct a fire diamond.

  5. I know how to retrieve more detailed information about chemicals from the internet.

  6. I know the different types of variables in an experiment and I can use them to set up an experiment.

  7. I know what a toxic substance is, what toxicology is, how a toxic substance can enter my body, and how the toxic effect of a substance is quantified (LD50).

  8. I know how to identify significant figures and I know how to calculate with them.

  9. I know the metric SI unit and the prefix system and what each unit and prefix mean.
