Cell Structure & Function

Now that we know how to identify the four biomolecules, we’ll begin moving outward in our level of cellular organization to discuss the different types of cells. once we understand how structure and function are related, we’ll discuss what makes something living.

BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:

  • define all terms from the previous 6 weeks,

  • compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells,

  • identify and describe the organelles within a cell,

  • discuss how the structure of a cell and its unique morphological characteristics relate to specific functions, and

  • describe what it means to be living.

Week 7 - Biology

Your Week Ahead

Day 1: Prokaryotes & Eukaryotes

  1. We’ll start the day reviewing the layout of the week, then jump into groups to differentiate prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

  2. After class, your Journal 4 that will be due next week. This is just on making sure you know the rules with labeling tables and figures.

Day 2: Cell Structure & Function

  1. You’ll begin day 2 with another Gizmos identifying organelles within eukaryotic cells in more detail. Use the activity given to walk through the Gizmos (note that it’s not a case study like last week, you will just be using it to zoom in to various eukaryotic cells).

  2. After class, begin studying for your next quiz next week’s Day 2!

Day 3: Microscopes

  1. We’ll begin class discussing the different types of microscopes to prepare for next week’s lab.

  2. We’ll then use the rest of time preparing for your next quiz on chemistry, water, and macromolecules.

  3. After class, study for your next quiz.

IMPORTANT DATES

Quiz 3 next Tuesday (9/30 or 10/1) covering chemistry of life, water, and biological macromolecules.

Did you…?

  • … finish your activities 7.1-7.4 this week?

  • … finish your journal?

  • … answer your big idea questions on this week’s Terms to Know?

  • … study for your quiz next Tuesday?
