Week 5 - Biology
Biological Macromolecules & Microscope Review
This week will be dedicated to identifying and differentiating the four major biological macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins. In addition, we’ll review the parts of the microscope that we’ll use this year.
BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:
define all terms from the previous 4 weeks,
successfully describe all essential concepts relating to the scientific method,
identify the parts of a Leica DM500 compound microscope and describe each part’s function,
recite all appropriate rules related to significant figures and know how to use them appropriately when calculating with measured numbers,
identify the characteristics of each monomer of the four macromolecules,
differentiate between monomers and polymers, and
compare where each macromolecules can be found within our diet.
Your Week Ahead
Day 1: Start Water Lab
We will begin with a quick walk-thru of the parts of the microscope, then you’ll use the rest of class time finishing the water lab from last week. I will also check your chemistry review.
AFTER CLASS, study for your quiz on Day 3 covering the scientific method and the parts of the microscope.
ALSO AFTER CLASS, complete journal 3 at some point this week. I will check this next Monday.
Day 2: Water Lab
Day 3: Quiz 3, Water Lab, and Biological Macromolecules
Today will be dedicated to you completing the water lab.
AFTER CLASS, study for your quiz!
We will begin with your quiz, then quickly discuss the four biological macromolecules. You’ll use the remaining time to review content videos surrounding macromolecules if you’ve finished your water lab.
AFTER CLASS, begin studying for your first test next week! This test will cover 3 things: The scientific method, parts of the microscope, and significant figures.
IMPORTANT DATES
Quiz 2 this Thursday/Friday: Scientific Method & Microscope Parts
Test 1 next week’s Thursday/Friday: Scientific Method, Microscope, & Significant Figures.
Did you…?
… complete your Properties of Water Lab?
… complete journal 3?
… begin studying for your first test?
… watch the four biological macromolecule videos and take notes on the Week 5 packet?
