Week 4 - Biology
Properties of Water
This week will be dedicated to reviewing significant figures and trends we can observe through the Periodic Table of the Elements while also discussing chemical bonds, and the four emergent properties of water.
BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:
define all terms from the previous 3 weeks,
describe the difference between ionic, covalent, & metallic bonds,
describe the trends we observe within the periodic table,
differentiate covalent bonds on a water molecule from hydrogen bonds between water molecules, and
list & describe the four emergent properties of water
Your Week Ahead
Day 1: Catching Up
Note - No Monday meeting due to Labor Day
With me being out of town for part of this week, your first day will either be finishing the videos you needed to watch surrounding the chemistry of life to be prepared for your next class. Even blocks will finish your measuring lab challenge on this first day.
Note - No journal this week.
Day 2: Chemistry of Life (and Water Lab Introduction if time allows)
We’ll start with working on the chemistry of life activity. Depending on time, we’ll set up the next lab, describing the unique properties of water that assists in giving life to this planet.
We’ll end with a quick discussion surrounding the bonds that exist among a water molecule then describe water’s four emergent properties.
We will then break into groups and begin the water lab if time allows. This lab takes multiple days, we’ll finish it next week during your first class.
AFTER CLASS, finish the chemistry review for me to check it your first class next week.
IMPORTANT DATES
Quiz 2 on your Day 3 of week 5 covering scientific method and parts of the microscope, which we will discuss on Monday.
Did you…?
… finish your significant figures lab? (almost all blocks have finished this lab; if you haven’t you’ll finish next week)
…complete your Chemistry Review?
… finish your “terms to know” Big idea?
… reminder, no journal this week!
