An Introduction into Organismal Diversity
It’s time to study the diversity of life! You’ll start off this week finishing our ecology discussion while watching a video about the Brazilian Cerrado, then connect those ecological relationships across the four eukaryotic kingdoms, then take a step back and look at how we classify various types of life based on their apomorphic traits.
BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:
define all terms from the previous weeks,
see how life does not evolve in a vacuum; rather, mutations give rise to adaptations that are more suited in a given ecosystem,
differentiate bacteria, archaea, protists, fungi, animals, and plants,
describe organisms within each clade to the right through analysis of the phylogenetic tree,
differentiate a phylogenetic tree from a cladogram, and
begin to characterize different types of organisms from various clades.
Week 25 - Biology
Your Week Ahead
Day 1: Biomes Practice Quiz
We’ll review key concepts around terrestrial and aquatic biomes and take a practice quiz for your biomes.
After class, complete journal 11 for this week (which I’ll check next week). Also Study for your biomes quiz. You should be reviewing all content/terms from week 22.
Day 2: Quiz & Diversity of Life Lab
We’ll begin the multi-week lab today. Follow the instructions on the board and choose which stations of which you would like to begin.
Over the weekend, research your paper topic. Remember that your organisms/habitat can’t overlap with another students so if you have an idea, let me know so that you can reserve your topic. You have to have 3 of your 4 organisms in the habitat before I’ll reserve it.
IMPORTANT DATES
Quiz on terrestrial and aquatic biomes on your day 2 this week
Did you…?
… finish journal 11?
… begin the multi-week lab?
