Energy Flow & Ecological Hierarchy
This week will be dedicated to discussing the interactions that exist among communities within an ecosystem. The emphasis for this week is “interaction”.
BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:
define all terms from the previous weeks,
differentiate all terrestrial and aquatic biomes from last week,
discuss how energy flows from a primary producer to consumers through a food web,
describe the differences between terms that describe how organisms get their nutrients (e.g. carnivore, frugivore, saprophyte,)
differentiate the five types of symbiotic interactions,
discuss trophic cascades while describing keystone species, and
list the levels of ecological hierarchy up to ecozones then list the 8 different ecozones.
Week 23 - Biology
Your Week Ahead
Day 1: Energy Flow
We would typically discuss energy flow but will spend time finishing aquatic biomes since we were out last Thursday and Friday.
AFTER CLASS, study for your test this Thursday/Friday! It’s covering Meiosis, Genetics and Inheritance, DNA Structure, DNA Replication, and Central Dogma. This is videos 2-6 in the genetics section of the content videos page.
Also after class, you have a summary of a peer-reviewed research article due next Monday.
Day 2: Trophic Cascades & the Brazilian Cerrado
We will begin with a discussion on trophic cascades and if we have time, dive into the coevolutionary relationships among animals in the Brazilian Cerrado.
AFTER CLASS, study!
Day 3: Genetics Test
You’ve got this! Today will be all dedicated towards your test. Any extra time can go towards reviewing terms to know for this week or working on your peer-reviewed article summary.

IMPORTANT DATES
Test this Thursday/Friday! See Day 1 discussion for content review
Did you…?
… finish your peer-reviewed summary?
… review your terms to know? We have a lot of new terms that we aren’t directly addressing in class.
… Finish your 23.1-23.2 discussion on energy flow and ecological hierarchy?
… finish your 23.3 on the Brazilian Cerrado? (we might not finish this during this week).
