Essential Science Skills

This week will be dedicated to reviewing the Central Dogma of Molecular biology and finishing our discussions surrounding genetics.

By the end of this week, you should be able to:

  • describe each phase of Meiosis in chronological order,

  • Use Punnett squares to describe genotypic and phenotypic ratios from monohybrid and dihybrid crosses,

  • discuss the processes of transcription and translation. Can you take a DNA sequence, convert it to a sequence of mRNA, then determine which amino acids are synthesized?

  • use all relevant terminology over the last three weeks surrounding genetics.

Week 21 - Biology

Your Week Ahead

Day 1: Final Discussion of the Central Dogma:

  1. We’ll use today to practice taking sequences of DNA to then convert them to RNA and then to proteins.

  2. AFTER CLASS, prepare for your quiz next Monday.

Day 2: DNA Extraction

  1. We’ll use the day to complete a lab extracting DNA from a banana. It’s always a fun lab!

  2. After class, study for your quiz on the Central Dogma Monday!

Quiz 8 Monday on the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology!

Did you…?

  • … finish your DNA extraction lab? I’ll be checking this Monday.

  • …prepare for your quiz this coming Monday? You’ll be given a DNA sequence and your job will be to transcribe an RNA sequence and then translate that into a protein or proteins.

  • … I’ll also check your meiosis lab from last week since we hadn’t had enough time to grade it in class.
